What is a vehicle wrap, and what does a wrap shop do?

What is a vehicle wrap, and why do businesses get one?
A vehicle wrap is printed or colored cast vinyl applied over the factory paint, removable later without damage when the paint is sound. Businesses wrap because the vehicle is already on the road: a Nielsen 2019 OOH study found 64 percent noticed a wrapped vehicle ad in the past month. Nearly any vehicle with sound paint can be wrapped, from a Model 3 to a 26 foot box truck.
Also asked as: what is vehicle wrapping · what are vehicle wraps · what's car wrapping · what does car wrapping meanWhat types of wraps and services does a wrap shop offer?
Ours covers full wraps, partial wraps, decals and lettering, fleet graphics, color change, chrome delete, printed perforated film on rear windows, reflective vinyl, wrap removal and rewraps, boat wraps, and wall and interior graphics, with design and printing in house. We do not do paint protection film, window tint, ceramic coating or paint. Ask any shop for that same list in writing so you know what is subcontracted.

How do I choose a car wrap shop in Chicago?
Judge the shop on evidence, not the ad. Ask to see finished vehicles, ask who prints the film (in house or sent out), ask which installer certifications the shop holds, and get the warranty in writing. We are Avery Dennison certified, print in house on HP Latex, and back every job with a 2-year workmanship warranty plus a 5-year material warranty. Walk the bays before you sign. Full checklist.
Also asked as: places that wrap cars chicago · car wrap shop chicago · who does car wraps in my area · car wrap near meShould I pick the wrap shop closest to me?
Closeness matters less than the bay the vehicle sits in. Some "near me" results are brokers or mobile installers who do not own a climate-controlled facility, and the install happens in a lot. We are one destination shop in Portage Park, and free pickup and delivery covers Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, Will and McHenry counties, so the drive is ours. Service area.
Also asked as: car wrap place near jefferson park · car wrappers logan square · car wrappers portage park · commercial vehicle wrap installer in Des Plaines ILWhat should I look for in a commercial vehicle wrap company?
Look for a shop that lives on business and fleet work, not one that fits a van in between color changes. Signs: in-house design and printing, a bay that fits your tallest truck, written fleet pricing tiers, a file retention policy so panels can be reprinted, and references from trades like yours. We run 2,800+ fleet accounts with 6 installers, three with 10+ years each. What separates a fleet shop.
Also asked as: commercial vehicle wraps · vehicle wraps chicago · who does vehicle wraps near me · vehicle wraps near meWho is the best vehicle wrap company in Chicago?
No one shop is best for every job, so rank shops on the evidence that matters for yours: a Google rating earned over years (ours is 4.9), BBB standing (ours is A+), how long they have wrapped (we have since 2001, in Chicago since 2014, 19,400+ vehicles), and whether you can spot their work on the street. Then compare written quotes line by line. How we compare shops.
Also asked as: best car wrap shops chicago · who are the best vehicle wrap companies in chicago · best vehicle wraps · best car wrap shop chicagoDo you take custom one-off wraps, or only fleets?
Both. A single work van, a personal color change, a Tesla or a Rivian gets the same two in-house designers, the same Avery Dennison MPI 1105 cast film with overlaminate, and the same proof approval before anything prints. We have 2,800+ fleet accounts, but one vehicle is a normal day in the shop. Send photos and what you have in mind. Design page.
Also asked as: custom car wrap shop chicago · custom car wrap shop near me · who does custom car wraps near me · custom vehicle wrap near meShould I wrap my vehicle myself or pay a shop?
If the vehicle advertises your business, pay a shop. The film is the cheap part; a first-timer ruins material on the first compound curve, stretches printed graphics out of register, and skips the post-heating that keeps edges down through a Chicago winter. Pre-cut kits stop short of edges and recesses, so the hardest part is still yours. Learn on a hood or a mirror cap first. Read the training manual.
Also asked as: Can I install the wrap myself · How difficult are vehicle wraps to install · How much of the panel edges does a pre-cut DIY wrap kit cover, and is doing it myself worth it compared with paying a pro? · Has anyone wrapped their own Tesla, and what was it like? What do installer certifications from Avery Dennison or 3M actually mean?
A manufacturer certification means the film maker tested that shop's installers on its own product; it speaks to installer training, not to the film itself. We are an Avery Dennison certified installer. We also install 3M films, including IJ180-CV3, and hold no 3M credential. If the protective wrap you want is paint protection film, that is a different trade and we do not install it.
Also asked as: avery dennison car wrap shop near schaumburg, il · Who is the best 3M or wrap installer in the northern suburbs of Chicago for a protective wrap on a new car? · car wrap quality chicagoWhat is the difference between a sign shop and a wrap shop?
A sign shop sells printed graphics and often subcontracts or improvises the install; a wrap shop installs full time and designs for the vehicle's panel breaks, rivets and recesses. The install is where wraps fail: edges, door handles, post-heating in recesses. Ask how many vehicles the installers wrap in a month and whether the person quoting has wrapped one. Our 6 installers do nothing else.
Also asked as: for a single hvac van in chicago, should i go to a sign shop or a wrap shop and what is the real difference · vehicle graphics shop near me · vehicle graphics company near me · vehicle graphics installer near meDo you train wrap installers or publish how you do it?
We publish our installation training manual on the site, written from the shop floor: surface prep, panel layout, squeegee technique, rivets and corrugation, post-heating and edge sealing. It is free to read. Wrapping is a trade with real demand; whether it pays well depends on speed and redo rate, which is what the manual is about. Vehicle wrap training manual.
Also asked as: is car wrapping a good business · how much do vehicle wrappers make · do car wrappers make good money · what do you call someone who wraps carsHow should I read a wrap shop's reviews and references?
Read the three-star reviews first; they show how the shop handles a problem. Look for reviews that mention a vehicle type like yours, a named installer, and whether the wrap still looked right a year later. Then ask the shop for two references from businesses in your trade and call them. Our Google rating is 4.9 and our BBB rating is A+. Read our reviews.
Also asked as: Can anyone give me the name of a wrap company near me that they have actually used? · vehicle wrap company near me reviews · vehicle wraps logos near me reviews · color changing car wrap near me reviewsShould I order through a national wrap marketplace or broker, or go to a local installer?
Find out who actually touches the vehicle. A marketplace or broker prints somewhere, ships the film, and assigns a local subcontractor you never vetted, so warranty claims bounce between three parties. A local installer that designs, prints and installs under one roof owns the whole result. Ask the broker for the installing shop's name and address, then ask that shop the same questions you would ask us. Local versus national.
Also asked as: Why should I choose you over a local wrap shop · is car wrap online legit · local car wrap shops chicago · local vehicle wrap companiesShould I get three quotes before picking a wrap shop?
Yes, and send all three shops the same brief: vehicle, coverage, artwork, photos and timeline, so the quotes describe one job. Then compare the spec, not the total: film and overlaminate by name, design included or not, what is covered, warranty terms, bay time. The cheapest quote usually drops a line item; the highest usually adds one. Ours arrives itemized within 24 hours once we have those details.
Also asked as: Should I get three quotes before picking a wrap shop? Can I visit the shop and see a wrap in progress before I decide?
Yes. Come during business hours and ask to see a vehicle mid-install; a good shop will show you. Look at the edges and wrapped recesses on a finished vehicle, ask which panel is being post-heated and why, and look at how the printed panels are stored before install. You can preview our work on the portfolio first, but nothing replaces standing in the bay.
Also asked as: car wrap shop near me open now chicago · car wrap shop near me open now · vehicle wraps near me open nowDoes the size of the wrap shop matter?
Size matters for two things: whether your vehicle fits indoors, and whether the shop can run several vehicles at once without rushing yours. Our facility has about 6,000 square feet of installation space and five bays, and many commercial vehicles up to about 40 feet long fit inside. Ask any shop whether your tallest or longest unit gets wrapped in a heated bay or in the lot.
Also asked as: car wrap biggest shop chicago · car wrap biggest shopWhat should I ask a wrap shop before I sign?
Seven questions settle it. Which film and overlaminate? Who prints it? Who installs it, and since when? Is installation indoors in a heated bay? Do I approve a proof on my vehicle before printing? Who keeps the production files? What does the warranty cover, in writing? Ours: Avery Dennison MPI 1105, printed in house, 6 installers, five indoor bays, yes, we keep your files, 2-year workmanship plus 5-year material.
Also asked as: What should a car owner ask the installer or shop that is installing the wrap · What installation expectations should be set ahead of time by the installer to the vehicle ownerDoes it matter whether the shop prints in house or sends the printing out?
It matters for color, timing and reprints. A shop that prints in house can profile its printers to your brand colors, reprint a misprinted panel the same day, and hold your files for a future repair. We print on two HP Latex 560 printers and an Epson SureColor R5070 up to 59 inches wide, then laminate on SEAL equipment, all in the same building as the bays.
Also asked as: Do you do all the work in-houseWhat are the red flags when choosing a wrap shop?
Walk away from a shop that will not name the film and overlaminate, quotes without photos of your vehicle, installs outdoors or in an unheated space, skips the proof, has no written warranty, or keeps no production files. One more: a verbal promise that the wrap lasts forever. A cast vinyl wrap has a 5 to 7 year service life; a real warranty names a term, ours: 2 years workmanship and 5 years material.
What does a wrap shop need from me to quote the job?

What information should I send to get an accurate wrap quote?
Send five things: year, make and model (plus roof height or box length), the coverage you want (full, partial or lettering), your logo or artwork, three or four photos of the vehicle, and your timeline. For more than one vehicle, add the count and mix. With those we send an itemized quote within 24 hours; without them you get a range and a follow-up email. Start a quote.
Also asked as: How do I get started with a car wrap near me · What is the process of ordering a vehicle wrap · How does it workCan you hold a spot on the schedule while we wait for approval?
We can pencil in a target week while your proof or purchase order works through approvals, and we will tell you honestly how firm that pencil is. The bay is confirmed when the proof is approved and the deposit terms in your quote are met, because printing starts at that point. If approval slips, say so early and we move the date rather than lose it.
Also asked as: Can you hold a spot on the schedule while we wait for approval? What happens if I never got the quote you sent?
Check spam and promotions first; itemized quotes go out as email with an attachment, which some business filters hold. Then reply to the original thread or call (312) 597-1286 and we resend it within 2 business hours. If the quote never existed because a detail was missing (vehicle, coverage or artwork), we tell you what we still need instead of leaving the thread quiet.
Also asked as: What happens if I never got the quote you sent?Do I need to bring the vehicle in to get a quote?
No. Standard vans, trucks and cars are quoted from year, make, model, coverage and artwork, because the wrappable area is known. Photos matter when the vehicle has ladder racks, a liftgate, body damage or a repaint. For a larger or mixed fleet we can survey the vehicles at your yard before production. You first see the shop at drop-off, unless you want to visit earlier.
How do design, proofs and file ownership work?

Do I need my own designer before I go to a wrap shop?
No. Design is part of the job here, done by 2 in-house designers who lay the artwork on a template of your exact vehicle so panel breaks, door handles and rivets land where they should. Bring whatever you have: a logo, a business card, a photo of a competitor's van you like, or nothing. If you already have an agency, we work from their brand standards. How design works.
Also asked as: do i need a designer before i go to a wrap shop or do they design it · Do you provide design help · What if I don't have a design ready · Who does the designCan AI tools or an online designer help design my wrap?
They are useful for concepts and useless for production. An AI image or an online template shows you a direction; it does not know your vehicle's panel breaks, bleed, rivet lines or that the door handle sits in the middle of your tagline. Bring the concept and our designers rebuild it on your vehicle's template. Try our wrap designer to rough out ideas before you call.
Also asked as: Can AI tools help design my vehicle wrap? · wrap design software · vehicle graphics design online · vehicle graphics design softwareWill I see a proof before anything is printed?
Yes, always. You get a digital proof laid on a template of your vehicle, and nothing prints until you approve it in writing. Revisions are unlimited until approval. Check the proof the way a stranger would: phone number digit by digit, web address, spelling, and where the design crosses doors and seams. A shop that prints without a signed proof is taking a risk with your money.
Also asked as: Can you send me a proof before you print? · Will you provide a digital mockup before printing? · Do you do a design mock up first? · Can I see the designs before they are printedCan you match my brand colors exactly?
Yes. Give us the Pantone, CMYK or hex values from your brand standards and we print to them on profiled HP Latex printers, then you approve a proof before production. A printed wrap has no color count limit; any color or photo prints. Screen color and printed color never match exactly, so ask any shop for a printed swatch on the actual film if the color is critical.
Also asked as: Can you match my company's specific brand colors? · Can you match my brand colors exactly · can car wraps be color matched · Can I choose my own colorsDo I need to provide my own logo, and what file types work?
Send a logo if you have one; if not, our designers build the wrap around your name and phone number. Vector files (AI, EPS or PDF) are best because they scale to a 20 foot box side without blur. A JPG or PNG from your website usually gets redrawn as vector first. Also send your exact phone number, web address and any license numbers, since those get checked at proof.
Also asked as: Do I need to provide my own logo and artwork? · What file formats do you need for my logo/images · If I don't have a logo, can you help me with that · Can I customize my vehicle wrap with a brand logo or artworkWho owns the design files after the wrap is done?
You do, and we keep the production files on record so you do not have to store them. That is how we match a wrap we did two years ago on a new vehicle, reprint one damaged door, or swap a phone number without redesigning. Ask any shop this before you sign; some treat the files as theirs and charge to recreate your own artwork. You own your wrap art.
Also asked as: Can you match a wrap you did for us two years ago on a new vehicle? · who owns the wrapCan I use a photo or a detailed image in my wrap design?
Yes, if the file is large enough. Images need at least 100 DPI at actual print size, and 300 DPI prints cleaner, so a photo that fills a van side has to start as a large original, not a social media download. Our designers test every image at full scale before the proof. Simple, high-contrast photos read best from a moving lane; busy images turn to texture.
Also asked as: Can I use a photo or complex image in my wrap design? · If I have a picture I want to put in my wrap, can I do thatHow do I make sure the text on my wrap is readable from a distance?
Keep the phone number and your main message at a minimum 4 inch letter height, which reads at about 50 feet, and use strong contrast against the background. One message per side, not a brochure. Our designers check the proof at the distance a driver behind you would see it, and we push back when a customer wants six services and three phone numbers on one door.
Also asked as: How do I make sure my text is readable from a distance? · Are there any guidelines to follow when designing vehicle wrapsCan one design work across different vehicle models?
Yes. We build a master layout with your logo placement, color blocks and message hierarchy, then adapt it to each vehicle's template, so a Transit, a box truck and a pickup read as one fleet even though no two panels match. Elements move to fit doors and wheel wells; the proportions stay. You approve a proof for each model before anything prints.
Also asked as: Can you design a wrap that works for multiple different vehicle models? How do I update the phone number on an existing wrap?
We reprint just the affected area from your stored production files and install it as a matched overlay or a replacement panel, so the rest of the wrap stays. The color is matched to the aged film as closely as print allows. Lettering-only vehicles are simpler: remove the old number, apply the new one. Do it before the old number is reassigned.
Also asked as: How do I update my phone number on the wrap if it changes? How do scheduling, drop-off and the install itself work?

How long is my vehicle actually in the shop, compared with the whole project?
Two different clocks. The whole project runs 3 to 5 business days from design approval, because printing and lamination happen before your vehicle arrives. Bay time, drop-off to pickup, is 2 to 3 business days for a van or truck. A partial wrap shortens bay time but not by half; cleaning and edge work are the same. Plan the vehicle's absence around bay time, not the quote date.
Also asked as: How long will you need to keep my vehicle for installation? · How long is the installation process · What is the turnaround for a wrap · How long does installation takeWhat should I do to the vehicle before drop-off?
Wash it, and skip wax or ceramic coating in the weeks before; both fight adhesion and we have to strip them. Clear out tools, personal items and anything on the roof or racks, and tell us about ladder racks, shelving bolts or a liftgate so the layout accounts for them. A repainted panel needs about 90 days to cure before film goes on. Leave the keys and a contact number.
Also asked as: Do I need to wash my car before bringing it in? · Do I have to wash my vehicle before installation · How do I prepare my vehicle for wrappingWhat does an acceptable wrap install look like, and what if I am not satisfied?
Acceptable: tight edges, no wrinkles or bubbles on flat panels, graphics aligned across doors, seams placed on panel breaks. Normal: a relief cut in a deep recess, a seam on a panel longer than the film is wide. Not acceptable: wrinkled or lifting sections, which will fail, so ask for a reprint and reinstall of that panel rather than a discount. Our 2-year workmanship warranty covers that fix in writing.
Also asked as: Is this wrap job acceptable, or should the shop reprint and redo the wrinkled sections or give me a discount? · What if I'm not satisfied with the installationCan you schedule around our technicians' shifts so each van is back for work?
Yes. Fleets are installed in stages, one or a few vehicles at a time, so the rest of the crew keeps working. Each van needs 2 to 3 business days of bay time; overnight and weekend scheduling can be arranged when a van cannot miss a weekday shift. Give us the shift calendar and we build the install order around it, slowest-to-spare vehicles first.
Also asked as: Can you work around our technicians' schedules so each van is back for its shift? Can a wrap be installed in winter in Chicago?
Yes, in the right building. Vinyl adhesive needs a warm, clean panel, which is why we do not install on site at a customer's yard and why every install happens in our heated, climate-controlled bays year round. The vehicle comes in cold, warms up, gets cleaned, then gets wrapped. After pickup, the adhesive keeps curing for 24 to 72 hours, so no pressure washing for the first week.
Also asked as: Where does the installation take place · Who does the installation and whereWhat actually happens to my vehicle during the install?
Clean first: a full wash, then a solvent wipe on every panel so no wax or road film sits under the vinyl. Printed and laminated panels are then laid out against the proof, applied one panel at a time with the film worked into recesses, trimmed at seams, and post-heated so stretched areas hold. A final inspection checks edges and alignment before pickup. Install process guide.
Also asked as: how car wraps are made · What should I expect on installation dayWhat paperwork do I need at drop-off?
Very little, because the approved proof and the quote are already on file. Bring the registration or something that shows you own or are authorized to modify the vehicle, and fleet accounts bring their account or PO number so the vehicle is matched to the right job. If someone else is dropping it off, tell us their name in advance. Pickup and delivery customers handle this by email.
Also asked as: What paperwork do I need to bring for the installation drop-off?Who fixes a damaged wrap that another shop installed?
We will look at it, but set expectations. A panel can only be reprinted to match if the original production files exist, so ask the first shop for them. Without files, we rescan or redesign the panel and match the aged film as closely as print allows, and a faded wrap next to fresh ink shows. Lifting edges and bubbles from a bad install can usually be repaired without reprinting.
Also asked as: who fixes damaged vehicle wraps in ChicagoIs my vehicle stored indoors overnight during the install?
Yes. Secure indoor overnight storage is available, and a vehicle mid-install stays inside between install days, which matters for two reasons: fresh film should not go out into a January night before the adhesive sets, and a half-wrapped van is not something you want sitting on a street. Ask any shop where your vehicle sleeps between install days; the answer tells you a lot.
What else can a wrap shop do, including work for other shops?

Do you wrap boats and pontoons?
Yes. Boat and pontoon wraps are quoted per project after we measure, because hull shape, registration numbers, rub rails and how much sits below the waterline change the layout and the labor. Cast vinyl with an overlaminate is used, the same family of film as a vehicle wrap. Send photos of the hull from both sides and the stern, the length, and whether it is trailered to us.
Also asked as: Do you wrap pontoon boats and marine vehicles? · Can you wrap a boat or other marine vehicles? · boat wrapping near me · boat wraps near meDo you do wall and storefront graphics too?
Yes, wall and interior graphics are printed on the same in-house HP Latex printers as our vehicle work and installed by the same crew, which is useful when you want the shop, the trucks and the lobby to match. Send a photo of the wall, its dimensions, and the surface (painted drywall, block, glass) and we quote the job per project. Storefront glass is quoted the same way.
Also asked as: interior wall wraps chicago · big wall graphics chicago · storefront graphicsDo you wrap motorcycles, helmets, golf carts or other odd items?
Ask with photos. Small, curved items like tanks, fairings and helmets are more labor per square foot than a van door, and golf carts and utility vehicles need a custom template because none exists. We take these case by case and quote per project after we see the piece. Any shop that quotes a helmet over the phone without seeing it is guessing.
Also asked as: Can you wrap a motorcycle or helmet? · Do you wrap golf carts or utility vehicles?Do you install graphics that another shop or a broker printed?
Yes. We do install-only work on graphics you print, and print-and-install for sign shops, agencies and brokers who sell the job and need a Chicago bay. Trade pricing is handled by email, not the public price list. Send the vehicle, the material you printed (brand and whether it is laminated), and the panel layout; cast film with overlaminate installs cleanly, calendered film we will talk you out of.
Also asked as: Do you do install only for graphics we print ourselves? Can I rent a bay to install my own wrap?
Yes. We rent bay space to other installers who need a heated, lit, indoor bay in Chicago for a day or a project. If you have never wrapped a vehicle, rent the bay after reading the training manual, not instead of it; the space does not make the install. Ask about dates, what is included, and whether an installer of ours can be booked alongside you. Rent the bay.
Also asked as: Can I rent your bay to install my own wrap? What legal and permit questions should I clear before wrapping?

Are car wraps legal in Illinois?
Yes, including a full color change. Three housekeeping items: most owners update the color on the title or registration when it changes significantly, so check with the Secretary of State; tell your insurer about the wrap's value so it is covered as an endorsement; and plates, lights and the windshield stay uncovered. Mirror and chrome finishes are legal in Illinois but check local rules on reflective finishes before choosing one.
Also asked as: are car wraps legal · is car wrapping legal · are car wraps illegal · what car wraps are illegalCan a shop put graphics on my windows, and is it legal on the front side windows?
Rear windows, yes: we install printed perforated film, which shows your graphic from outside and stays see-through from the driver's seat. Front side windows and the windshield are a different matter; Illinois regulates light transmittance there, so we keep perforated film to the rear glass. If a shop offers to cover your front door windows with graphics, check with the Secretary of State before you say yes.
Also asked as: Can you install perforated window film on rear windows? · Is window perforation legal for front side windows in Illinois?Do I need a permit or approval to drive a wrapped business vehicle in Chicago?
No permit is needed to drive a wrapped business vehicle in Chicago. Parking a vehicle as a stationary billboard, or wrapping it for a third party's advertising, can fall under city sign and advertising rules, so check with the city before planning that. Content follows the same rules as any ad: no claims you cannot back, and license numbers where your trade requires them.
Also asked as: Do I need a permit for mobile advertising in downtown Chicago? · Are there restrictions on what I can advertise on my car?Can I put a banner or graphics on my windshield?
No. Illinois requires an unobstructed view through the windshield, and we do not apply film or banners there. The usual workaround is a printed sun strip at the top, which sits in the same regulated zone and is a question for the Secretary of State, not for a wrap shop. Put the message on the hood, the doors and the rear glass, where it is legal and more readable anyway.
Also asked as: Can I wrap my windshield with a banner? Is it legal to cover license plates or lights with vinyl?
No. Plates, headlights, taillights, turn signals and reflectors stay uncovered, and we trim the wrap around every one of them, plates included, rather than wrapping over and cutting a window. Tinted light film is a different product and a separate legal question; check Illinois rules before adding it. If a shop proposes wrapping across a plate recess or a lens, that tells you how much else it is skipping.
