I'll tell you the honest answers for our shop — and the red flags to watch for at any shop. These are the questions that actually separate quality from liability.
01
What vinyl brand and product code do you use?
This is the most important question. The answer should be a specific product code — Avery Dennison MPI 1105, 3M IJ180-CV3, or equivalent cast vinyl. 'Premium vinyl' is not an answer. If they can't name the product, you're getting calendered vinyl that will fail in 18 months in Chicago conditions.
CFW answer: Avery Dennison MPI 1105 and 3M IJ180-CV3 cast vinyl on every installation. No exceptions. We'll show you the material spec sheet if you want it.
02
Is your installation bay climate-controlled?
Vinyl adhesive requires 65–75°F to bond properly. A shop installing in an unheated garage in February is creating future failures regardless of vinyl quality. This is non-negotiable for Chicago fleet work.
CFW answer: Our facility at 4711 N Lamon Ave maintains 70°F year-round. Every installation achieves full adhesion on day one.
03
Do you offer a workmanship warranty? What does it cover?
A shop confident in their installation offers a warranty. Look for at least 2 years covering lifting, peeling, and installation defects. No warranty = no confidence in their own work.
CFW answer: 2-year workmanship warranty on every wrap. Material warranty from Avery Dennison and 3M covers 5–7 years on the vinyl itself.
04
Who owns the design files after the job is done?
Most shops keep your production files as retention leverage. If you want to switch shops, you start over on design — paying $500–$1,500 for art you already paid for. Ask explicitly.
CFW answer: You own your files from job one. Production files emailed to you on delivery of your first vehicle. Full resolution, print-ready. No conditions.
05
Can I see wraps you've installed that are 3+ years old?
Any shop can show you a fresh install. Ask to see how their work holds up at year 3 or 4. Edge condition, color retention, and rocker panel integrity tell you everything.
CFW answer: We have active fleet accounts from 2018 and earlier with wraps still performing. We can connect you with clients for reference conversations.
06
Do you use knifeless tape or blades for cutting seams?
Blades on panel seams risk scratching the factory paint — a risk that shows up at wrap removal. Knifeless tape cuts the film without ever touching the vehicle surface.
CFW answer: Knifeless tape on every seam, every installation. No blades on vehicle surfaces. This is why we have zero verified paint damage claims in 10+ years.
07
What is your fleet pickup and scheduling policy?
For fleet accounts, logistics matter. Does the shop come to you? Can they work around your vehicles' operational schedules? A shop that requires drop-off and pickup adds real cost to every install.
CFW answer: Free fleet pickup throughout Chicagoland — Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, Will, and McHenry Counties. Fleet accounts get priority scheduling.
The one thing that tells you everything
Ask the shop to show you a wrap they installed 4 years ago. That one request filters out 80% of shops immediately — either they don't have any long-term clients to show you, or their work doesn't hold up to what they claimed. Four-year-old cast vinyl on a commercial van, properly installed, should still look sharp. If it doesn't, you have your answer.
