Vehicle Wrap Materials Guide
Cast vinyl only. No shortcuts. Every vehicle wrap at Chicago Fleet Wraps uses Avery Dennison MPI 1105 or 3M IJ180-CV3 cast vinyl — rated 5–7 years outdoor. We never use calendered vinyl. This guide explains why material choice matters, how cast vinyl outperforms calendered, and what each material specification means for your wrap's longevity.
Cast Vinyl vs. Calendered Vinyl
The single most important factor in a vehicle wrap's longevity is the vinyl type. Cast vinyl is manufactured by pouring liquid PVC onto a casting sheet, producing a thin, flexible film. Calendered vinyl is made by pressing PVC through rollers, creating a thicker, stiffer film with built-in memory stress.
In Chicago's extreme weather — with temperatures ranging from -20°F in January to 100°F in July, plus road salt, UV exposure, and freeze-thaw cycles — calendered vinyl fails predictably within 2–3 years. Cast vinyl handles these conditions for 5–7 years.

UV Overlaminate — Standard on Every Install
Every printed wrap receives a UV-protective overlaminate layer. This clear film protects the printed graphics from UV fading, scratches, chemicals, and road debris.

- Avery Dennison DOL 1000Z — Gloss finish. Standard overlaminate for fleet wraps.
- Avery Dennison DOL 1300Z — Matte finish. Reduces glare, popular for color-change wraps.
- 3M 8518 — Gloss overlaminate. Pairs with 3M IJ180-CV3 printed wraps.
- 3M 8520 — Matte overlaminate. Non-reflective finish for modern aesthetics.
Color Change Films
Color change wraps use pre-colored vinyl film (no printing needed):
- Avery Dennison Supreme Wrapping Film (SWF) — 120+ colors. Easy Apply RS adhesive. 5-year outdoor rating.
- 3M 2080 Series — 80+ colors including gloss, matte, satin, and specialty finishes. Comply adhesive.
- 3M 1080 Series — predecessor to 2080. Still available in select colors.
Print Technology — HP Latex
All printed vehicle wraps are produced on HP Latex wide-format printers using water-based latex inks. HP Latex offers several advantages over solvent and UV printers:
- Pantone-matched color accuracy — consistent across fleet vehicles printed weeks apart
- UV-resistant inks — won't fade for 5–7 years under UV overlaminate
- Solvent-free — no VOCs, no outgassing period, safe for indoor and outdoor use
- Scratch-resistant — latex inks cure harder than solvent inks
Why Material Matters in Chicago
Chicago's climate is one of the harshest environments for vehicle wraps in the United States. The combination of extreme cold, road salt (October through April), intense summer UV, and daily temperature swings puts tremendous stress on vinyl films. Cast vinyl is specifically engineered to handle these conditions. Calendered vinyl is not.
When choosing a wrap shop, always ask what material they use. If the answer isn't cast vinyl from Avery Dennison or 3M, your wrap will fail prematurely.
